Safety Patrol

One very important responsibility at SES is safety. Each year, fifth graders have the opportunity and privilege to help ensure student safety by volunteering for the Snoqualmie Elementary School Safety “Paw” Patrol Squad. The purpose of the SES Safety “Paw” Patrol is to assist students in crossing crosswalks safely. Members of the Safety Patrol do an outstanding service for their community and school, and they have a wonderful opportunity to develop leadership, commitment and responsibility skills. The program is led by Mr. Ziemkowski and Mrs. Bates.
Each spring, a number of SES fourth graders are invited to join safety patrol as trainees in anticipation of their upcoming transition to fifth grade in the fall. They learn the ropes from the current fifth graders and will be invited to continue with safety patrol at the beginning of the next school year. Additional applications are accepted from fifth graders during the beginning of the school year. Information and applications are shared directly with students at school and communicated through ParentSquare.
In order to participate in Safety Patrol all patrol members must agree to:
- Report to duty on time and perform all duties faithfully.
- Send Mr. Ziemkowski and Mrs. Bates a ParentSquare message, Schoology message, or email as soon as possible if unable to fulfill duties as scheduled.
- Understand and follow the attendance and tardy policy. Note: If you have three unexcused absences or tardies you will be removed from the safety patrol squad and will be unable to attend the end of year celebration.
- Follow the Cougar Way by being respectful, responsible, and safe.
- Stay alert while on duty. Do not use any electronic devices.
- Meet all classroom responsibilities, complete all work, and follow directions.
- Report to Mr. Ziemkowski or Mrs. Bates any dangerous practices of students, passers-by, or drivers.
safety patrol information

Can I join Safety Patrol if I usually ride the bus?
Yes — but not on the days you’re scheduled for patrol duty. Unfortunately, buses arrive after patrol duty begins in the morning and leave before patrol duty ends in the afternoon.
-
AM patrol needs to be dropped off by 8:55. When you arrive, go straight to Mr. Ziemkowski’s room to gather materials and go to your position by 9 a.m.
-
PM patrol needs to be picked up at 3:50 p.m. You will leave the crosswalk at 3:45, return your materials, and then get picked up.
How will I know if I made the SES Safety “Paw” Patrol?
Mr. Ziemkowski and Mrs. Bates will read through all the applications to find students who are responsible, respectful, safe and show leadership qualities. If you have made a safety patrol squad, you will get a "Welcome to Patrol" letter and be added to the SES Safety Patrol Squad Schoology course.
How do I know when I am scheduled for Patrol duty?
You will be given a schedule to take home for each trimester with plenty of notice prior to your shift. Your teacher will also have a copy of the schedule and a schedule will be posted on the door of the STEM classroom. The schedule will also be posted on our Safety Patrol Squad Schoology course. Note: If you have 3 unexcused absences or tardies you will be removed from the safety patrol squad and be unable to attend the end of year celebration.
What time does my shift start and end?
AM duty is from 8:55-9:15. PM duty is from 3:30-3:50.
If you are on the AM squad, you need to arrive at 8:55 in the morning. Your shift will end at 9:15 when the bell rings. If you are on the PM squad, you will be dismissed from class at 3:30 and you will need to be picked up or walk home (if you are a walking student with permission) at 3:50. There is NO BUS for AM or PM patrol.
Where do I go when I’m on Patrol duty?
You will do patrol duty at the crosswalk located between the SES bus loop and Centennial Fields. If you are the first to arrive in the morning, or the afternoon, wait by the STEM classroom door for at least one more member of your squad to arrive before heading to the bus loop. Never go to the bus loop alone.
What if I’m sick or can’t make my shift?
We understand that people get sick and/or have appointments. When this happens and it means you will miss your scheduled patrol shift you need to send Mr. Ziemkowski and Mrs. Bates a ParentSquare message, Schoology message, or email as soon as possible to let him know. The school and your other patrol members are counting on you to be there. Therefore, if you have three unexcused absences or tardies you will be removed from the safety patrol squad and will be unable to attend the end of year celebration.
Do we still go out in bad weather?
YES! SES students depend on you to keep them safe in all weather conditions! It is mandatory that you wear a coat on cold/rainy days. Gloves and hats are also encouraged!
Will there be an end of year celebration?
YES! We will celebrate everyone’s hard work and dedication at the end of the school year. You will be invited to participate in the celebration if you have fulfilled all your required duties for the year. Remember, if you have three unexcused absences or tardies, you will be removed from the safety patrol squad and will be unable to attend the end of year celebration.
