Guide to Cougarisms

A Handy Guide to SES Cougarisms

Usually schools have a particular jargon unique to them, and SES is no exception. It is often difficult to get a handle on what each term means. In an effort to help you understand these Cougarisms, here is a simple glossary we've compiled just for you!

Associated Student Body (ASB)

The students at SES make up the Associated Student Body. ASB funds are used to support certain school-wide student programs, such as incentives. Two representatives from each fifth-grade classroom are elected each year to serve on the ASB Student Council in order to help promote issues important to the ASB, to raise funds for determined projects and to work collaboratively with the SES PTSA.

Battle of the Books

A district competition between intermediate students (4th and 5th grade). Independently, students read a selected list of 14 books. In teams of 5, students memorize story elements and factual details from each story and answer practice questions. One final team represents SES in the spring at the districtwide Battle of the Books based on demonstrated expertise on all 14 titles through previous school quiz sessions.

Camp Seymour

An outdoor education program for fifth-grade students in which they spend three days and two nights in Glen Cove on the Key Peninsula with their classmates, teachers, parent volunteers and high school counselors.

Cougar Gram

A form that SES staff fill out for K-5th grade students who Play The Cougar Way by being respectful, responsible and safe. All Cougar Gram recipients are entered into weekly drawings for prizes.

Cougar Pride Winner

Each month a drawing is held with the names of the students who have received Cougar Grams during the month. Four names from each grade level will be selected, and those students will receive a Star Student wristband and get their picture taken with the other winners.

Donuts for Grownups

An opportunity for students to share a hot cup of coffee or tea and a sweet donut before school with a special person in their lives.

Family Fun Night

Fun, family events sponsored by the PTSA at little to no cost to you. Previous events have included a holiday bazaar, an evening of bingo, arts and science night, and a sock hop. These are enjoyable nights for the entire family!

Intramural Sports

Special classroom sports leagues coordinated by our PE teacher, Mr. McEldowney. These recess activities for fourth and fifth grade may include flag football, volleyball, kickball and basketball.

Learning Improvement Team (L.I.T.)

A collaborative group of staff (principal, classroom teachers and classified staff), representative elected parents and a community member working together to improve learning for all students at SES.

Play the Cougar Way

The Cougar Way refers to behavior expectations for SES studentS: Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be Safe.

PTSA

YOU and your child(ren) are the SES Parent Teacher Student Association! The SES PTSA works closely with SES staff to determine needs in student support, involve students as active participants, raise money to fund programs and materials, and promote parent involvement in their children's education.

Recognition Assemblies

Each trimester, classrooms are invited to the gym to honor student accomplishments across the school in this fun assembly.

Spiritwear

A special t-shirt or sweatshirt with our school's name, mascot, colors, and/or logo. These are usually available for purchase in the fall though the PTSA.

Star Student

Each month, a drawing is held with the names of students who have received special golden Cougar Grams (given during recess) during the month.  One student from each grade level will receive a Star Student wristband and their picture on the wall in the hallway if they are one of the names chosen. The more Cougar Grams earned, the better chances they have to become a Star Student!
