Washington State Regions

Research Project – Note-taking

You will be compiling notes about one of the five major regions of our state.  They are:

Ø     The Coastal Region

Ø     The Western/Puget Sound Lowlands

Ø     The Cascade Mountains

Ø     The Columbia Plateau

Ø     The Okanogan Highlands/Rocky Mountains

You will use the information you’ve gathered to create a project which I will explain to you later.  These are the things that you need to include in your notes:

ü     Description of the geography (such as rivers, lakes, mountains, plains, deserts, forests, etc.)

ü     Description of the climate (temperature, precipitation, etc.)

ü     Description of major business/industry (in other words, what different things do many people in your region do to earn a living?)

ü     Description of recreation (what do people in your region do for fun?)

Your notes should include details about all of the four categories listed above.  However, you may go beyond these guidelines to provide additional information.  You will be provided with selections from the textbooks Discovering Washington and Celebrate the States: Washington, as well as from The World Book Encyclopedia to help you compile your notes.  You will be taking your notes in class – you won’t be allowed to take copies of the three resources listed above with you.  You may also use the internet, other classroom texts, or library materials to gather additional information.

Everyone should write their own notes in their own words.  I will collect your notes, as well as a bibliography, along with your final project (more details will be coming soon about just what the final project is going to be).  Good luck!
